The series includes the MPT-8 digital transport and MPD-8 DAC, designed for playback of DSD format in pure (native) form, as well as the MPS-8 integrated SACD/CD/string player. In addition, the DREAM series recently announced a super power amplifier 2x1600 W!
Andreas Koch, head and chief developer of PLAYBACK DESIGNS, believes that the new series could be called a reference series, but its performance goes beyond even this concept. According to him, the sound quality of the new components has reached such a high level that music lovers could only dream about before.
new schematic solutions and algorithms used in the dream series have been developed and tested on several prototypes over the last few years. according to andreas koch, who was involved in the creation of the dsd format and sacd standard at sony in his time, these components incorporate all the experience gained over the last 30 years. together with the developer bert gerlach (germany), it was possible to reach a technical solution of an uncompromising level, and so flexible that in the following years it will be possible to upgrade the predecessor if necessary.
The MPD-8 digital-to-analog converter is based on discrete elements, without the use of ready-made converter chips. As we know, in typical DAC chips, which are low-bit delta-sigma converters, the DSD-stream conversion takes place not in pure single-bit form, but with an increase in the digit capacity. In contrast, PLAYBACK DESIGNS has created its own converter designs based on FPGAs, in which the conversion takes place really in pure form. In the MPD-8, this direction has been further developed, which allowed for the further development of the converter.
Digital transport CD/SACD MPT-8
The DAC supports DSD stream conversion with sampling rate up to 11.2 MHz (DSD256, 4xDSD, Quad-DSD) inclusive. It is equipped with various digital inputs: AES/EBU, S/PDIF, USB, optical TOSLINK and P-LINK. There are symmetrical and asymmetrical outputs, mute analog volume control. Interestingly, with the MPD-8 you can not only playback digital audio signals, but also record them. For this purpose, special software has been prepared that allows you to create on a connected computer music files in DSD and PCM formats.
The DAC has three power supplies: one line PSU for each analogue channel (using ceramic PCBs) and one for the digital circuit. The same principled approach is shown by the use of an indicator display. While many companies install beautiful multicolour displays on their machines that require the use of synchronous generators that negatively affect the sound, PLAYBACK DESIGNS prefers to use more modest indicators.
